Lester F. Landry, 101, of Franklin died February 12 in the Maples Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Wrentham. He was the husband of the late Florence (Rivet) Landry who died in 1979.
Born in Franklin, April 6, 1909, the son of the late George and Florina (Boucher) Landry, Mr. Landry was raised in Franklin and had lived there for most of his life with the exception of several years when he had lived in Wrentham.
Mr. Landry had been a cabinet maker for the E. Broder Company in Woonsocket for many years.
Lester in his long life enjoyed and lived his life to the fullest.
In his younger days he had been a professional boxer fighting in both the lightweight and middleweight classes. He had also raced motorcycles.
A talented figure skater, he had enjoyed ice dances at Lake Pearl and had also skated with the Ice Capades. He purchased his last pair of figure skates at the age of 80 and when he could no longer get on the ice he could be seen at the Franklin Ice Rink watching others.
Lester was known for many years as the “Greeter” at the Ben Franklin Savings Bank in Franklin. He was always there when the employees came to work to welcome them and start their day off with a smile and a good word.
After his morning at the Bank he would be off to the West Central Honey Dew Donut Shop where he was a favorite among the regulars and the staff for many years.
Lunchtime was Tri-County High School and his daily meal in Gerry’s Place where he had his own table and where he become a part of the school family as well.
Lester and his late wife did not have any children of their own but he is survived by several nieces, including Susanne Benoit and her husband Roland of Mansfield and many great-nieces and nephews.
He is also survived by a host of friends in Franklin who will remember the little man in the hat who made everyday a special day for all.
His funeral will be held on Friday, February 18 from the Ginley Funeral Home of Franklin, 131 Main St. in Franklin at 9:15 followed by a funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Calling hours will be on Thursday from 4-7 p.m.
