TEWKSBURY: William S. Dunlevy, age 85, a resident of Tewksbury for 46 years, formerly of Malden, passed away on Friday, February 11, 2011 at Saints Medical Center in Lowell.
He was the beloved husband of Joan M. (Sughrue) Dunlevy, with whom he celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary on November 11, 2010.
Born in Melrose on October 3, 1925, he was the son of the late William and Ellen (MacLean) Dunlevy.
Mr. Dunlevy was raised on Clinton Street in Malden. He attended Malden Schools and graduated from Malden High School in 1942. During his high school years, Mr. Dunlevy was the captain and an all-scholastic hockey player at Malden High.
After graduation, he attended Northeastern University.
In 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. Mr. Dunlevy served during World War II with the 94th Infantry Regiment at the "Battle of the Bulge". He was awarded numerous decorations for his military service including the Good Conduct Medal, the Victory Medal, the Combat Infantry Badge, the Sharpshooter Rifle Marksmen Badge, the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon and the Bronze Star Medal.
Following his military service, he attended and graduated in 1950 from Boston University.
Mr. Dunlevy resided in Malden, Everett and Wilmington until moving to Tewksbury in 1965.
Prior to his retirement , his career was spent as a finance company supervisor and as an officer with State Street Bank until 1988.
He enjoyed many activities including tinkering, puttering around his yard, assisting family and neighbors with his carpentry skills, attending his children's and grandchildren's sporting events, watching college and professional football and hockey, and spending time with his family in the mountains of New Hampshire or at the lakes and ocean of Maine.
In addition to his beloved wife Joan, he is survived by four sons, William L. Dunlevy of Andover, Stephen R. Dunlevy and his wife Doreen of Tewksbury, Alan W. Dunlevy and his wife Diane of Tewksbury, and John T. Dunlevy and his wife Maureen of Georgetown; three daughters, Sheila M. Fabiano and her husband Thomas , Ellen J. Pendleton and her husband Raymond, and Jennifer A. Connolly and her husband Barry all of Tewksbury; two sisters, Eleanor Coleman of Meredith, NH and Marjorie Wright of Melrose; eighteen grandchildren; forty-four nieces and nephews.
Mr. Dunlevy was the father of the late Barry F. Dunlevy, father-in-law of the late Gail C. (Smith-King) Dunlevy, brother of the late Frank J. Dunlevy and Jean Coleman and brother -in-law of the late John Coleman, Thomas Coleman and Francis Wright.
Calling hours Wednesday, Feb. 16, from 2-8 p.m., at the Farmer & Dee Funeral Home, 16 Lee St., Tewksbury. His funeral will be held Thursday, Feb. 17, at 9 a.m., from the funeral home, followed by his Funeral Mass at 10 a.m., at St. Williams Church, 1351 Main St., Rte. 38, Tewksbury. Interment at Tewksbury Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Barry F. Dunlevy Foundation, 61 John St., Tewksbury, MA 01876.
