GLOUCESTER: Emily (Comeau) Hanrahan, 91, of Sheedy Park, died peacefully Saturday, February 12, 2011 in the Den-Mar Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Rockport. She was the wife of the late Leo C. “Lefty” Hanrahan who died in May 1976.
Born in Meteghan River, Nova Scotia, Canada on May 29, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Cyriac and Marie Rose Comeau. Emily immigrated to the United States at the age of 12 and was raised by her uncle and aunt, Capt. Fay and Elizabeth D’Eon. She attended St. Ann’s School in Gloucester and was a graduate of Holy Family High School in New Bedford class of 1938.
Emily was employed as a bookkeeper for the Cape Ann Chapter No. 1471, Loyal Order of Moose for many years. She also once worked in the Treasurer’s office at Gloucester City Hall and the former Tompkins Furniture Store in Gloucester.
She was an avid reader and loved to knit and crochet. Active as a Girl Scout leader, she was also a founding incorporator of the Day-by-Day, Adult Day Health Center. She also enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her beloved granddaughter, Erika.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Timothy L. and Grace (Merchant) Hanrahan of Magnolia; her daughter, Sheila F. Hanrahan and granddaughter, Erika L. Hanrahan both of Gloucester; a cousin, Madeline Nocton of RI; a sister-in-law, Alda Comeau of Nova Scotia and two nieces, Yolande Seeley and Adrienne Comeau both of Nova Scotia. She was also predeceased by two brothers, George and Gerard Comeau.
Her funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday in the Holy Family Parish, St. Ann Church, Pleasant St., Gloucester at 11 a.m. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday in the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester from 4 – 8 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the American Diabetes Assoc., 330 Congress St. 5th Fl., Boston, MA 02110. Interment will be held in the Beechbrook Cemetery, W. Gloucester.
