Maria L. (Lima) "Baba" Barros, 99, of New Bedford died January 5, 2004 at Taber Street Nursing Home surrounded by her family.
She was the wife of the late Ayres Barros, and daughter of the late Joao Mauricio and Rosa Maria Neves.
Mrs. Barros was born in Santo Antao, Cape Verde, and had lived in New Bedford since 1921.
Mrs. Barros was formerly employed as a housekeeper and in several local textile mills.
She was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Church.
She enjoyed cooking and was a very giving person. She devoted all of her life to taking care of the needs of others including tending to the sick. Mrs. Barros was a beloved mother figure to many in the Cape Verdean Community. Everyone was always welcomed in her home. She would take great joy in feeding all who entered her home. Throughout her life, she was an icon in the Cape Verdean Community.She would have celebrated her 100 birthday on January 27, 2004.
Survivors include 3 daughters, Rose M. Almeida, and her husband Rookie, Dorothy S. Gomes, and her husband Dje Dje, and Sylvia Silva, all of New Bedford; a sister, Victoria Lima of Sao Vincente, Cape Verde; 3 brothers in Cape Verde; 4 grandchildren, Marcia Cruz, Marie Robinson, and her fiancé Lawrence Tobey, Cynthia Gomes and Elayne Gomes-Battle, and her husband David; 4 great-grandchildren, Christopher Cruz, Jamal Cruz, Alyssa Battle and Adrianna Battle; 2 great-great-grandchildren, Sierra Cruz and Jalen Cruz; and several nieces and nephews.
She was the grandmother of the late Dolores "Cookie" Silva.
