MacMillan, John, age 94, lifelong resident of Dedham, MA died February 6, 2011. Predeceased by his loving wife Anne (Becker) MacMillan, his son John MacMillan, and his dear companion Dorothy Sarro also of Dedham. Also predeceased by his brother Douglas and sisters Florence and Gertrude. Survived by daughter Anne (Korpi) Dolan and her husband James Q. Dolan of Needham, granddaughter Sharon Korpi and her husband Denis Ruttenberg of California and grandson Stephen Korpi and his wife Heather Law of Oregon and James L. Dolan of Arlington, and cherished great-grandchildren Sam Ruttenberg and Sofia Korpi. Also loved by many nieces and nephews.
John was a proud World War II veteran who saw combat in 17 major engagements with the army in North Africa, Sicily and Italy, participated in the landing at Anzio with the 5th Army and was photographed by Margaret Bourke-White for her book, They Called It Purple Heart Valley. He was a former house builder, supervisor for Westinghouse and long time employee of the Dedham Housing Authority. John loved cribbage, volunteered for many civic causes in Dedham, was past commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2017, and member of the American Legion. In his late 80’s and 90’s, he became a talented painter of watercolors.
Visiting hours at the George F. Doherty & Sons Wilson-Cannon Funeral Home, 456 High St., Dedham, MA 02026 on Friday from 4-8PM. The Funeral Service will be held in the Funeral Home on Saturday at 10:30AM. Interment Brookdale Cemetery, Dedham.
