TEWKSBURY: Walter F. Golen, Jr. age 76, a resident of Tewksbury for over 70 years, passed away on Saturday, February 5, 2011, at the D'Youville Senior Care Center in Lowell, surrounded by his caring family.
He was the husband of Alice M. (Farrell) Golen, with whom he celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary on September 9, 2010.
Born in Lowell on November 23, 1934, he was the son of the late Walter "Wally" and Cecilia "Sally" (Reed) Golen.
Walter was raised in Tewksbury, attended Tewksbury schools and graduated from Tewksbury High School in 1954. During his high school years, he was a four year member of the Tewksbury Redmen Varsity Basketball Team and the Redmen Varsity Football Team serving as captain of the football team in his senior year. In 1995, Walter was inducted into the Tewksbury High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
Prior to his retirement in 1998, he was employed for 42 years with the Massachusetts Electric Company, where he worked in electrical maintenance. Mr. Golen was the former owner of Golen's Garage and A-1 Sewer Service of Tewksbury.
Walter was a member of the Tewksbury Congregational Church, where he served as a former member of its Board of Trustees.
He was a member of the Tewksbury Lions Club and a recipient of their Lion of the Year Award.
Walter enjoyed helping those in need, hunting for bargains, skiing, gardening, photography, volunteering as videographer, outdoor activities and hosting weekly cookouts for his family and friends.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Richard J. "Ricky" Golen and his wife Vicki of Tewksbury, Robert J. Golen of Hampton, NH and Wayne P. Golen of Tewksbury; three daughters, Meredith A. Lumb of Tewksbury, Robin J. Conley and her husband Len of Milford, NH and Tracy M. Smith and her husband Paul of Methuen; six grandchildren, Billy Golen and his wife Jess, Adam Golen, Evan Lumb, Mitchell and Chris Conley and Erin Smith; one great grand-daughter, Kiley Golen and a great grandchild to be born in the very near future; one brother, Louis "Mickey" Golen of Tewksbury; one sister, Phyllis Button of Tewksbury; also many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours Wednesday, Feb. 9, from 4-8 p.m., at the Farmer & Dee Funeral Home, 16 Lee St., Tewksbury. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 10, at 10 a.m., in the Tewksbury Congregational Church, East St., Tewksbury Center (No Procession from the funeral home, kindly meet the family at church). Interment will follow at Tewksbury Cemetery.
