Joseph V. Candura, of Arlington, died Friday at Massachusetts General Hospital. He was 85.
Joseph was raised in South Boston and later settled with his family in Arlington. He was the son of the late Vincent and the late Rosaria (Napoli) Candura. A decorated veteran, he served with the US Navy during World War II in both the Pacific and Mediterranean. After his military service, he enrolled at Suffolk University and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration in 1949. After several years in the private sector he began work with the Department of Defense. At the time of his retirement he was an executive in the Electronics Systems Division at Hanscom Air Force Base. Joseph was active in his community. He was a member of the Arlington Town Meeting and the Arlington Republican Town Committee. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, The Knight of Columbus and the Arlington Lions Club. He also served as a Eucharistic Minister at the parish of Saint Eulalia. A proud alumnus of Suffolk University, Joseph was inducted into the Half-Century Club of the University in 1999. He was devoted to his family and enjoyed their company. He loved to savor his wife’s culinary creations, and to treat his family to annual outings on Maine’s seacoast. A great conversationalist, he followed and enjoyed chatting about current affairs, politics and sports.
He shared 50 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Rose Marie (Mirabile) Candura, who died this past December. A devoted father to Ann–Marie Candura, Lisa Canniff and her husband Chris all of Arlington, he was a loving grandfather to Jacqueline, Christopher and Nicholas. He was a dear brother of the late Grace Lane, Charles and Vincent Candura.
His funeral procession will be from the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main St., Medford, Wednesday, February 9th at 9 AM followed by a Funeral Mass celebrated in St. Eulalia Church, 50 Ridge Street, Winchester, at 10 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend and may visit with the family, Tuesday 4 - 8. Services will conclude with burial at Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford.
