WEBSTER - Lorraine C. “Rainey” (Douglass) Bates, 85, formerly of Christopher Heights, died Tuesday, January 25, 2011, in Saint Mary’s Health Center, Worcester, surrounded by those who loved her. Her husband of 27 years, Rolland L. “Roy” Bates, died in 1975.
She leaves a daughter-in-law, Cynthia L. (Celko) Bates of North Grosvenordale, CT and 3 grandchildren, Christie L. Bates and her fiancé John Motyka, Jr., Lindsey C. Bates and Tyler S. Bates. Her son, Brian D. Bates of North Grosvenordale, CT, died last May.
She was born in Worcester and raised in Shrewsbury, the daughter of Gerald T. and Alice M. (Christie) Douglass. She lived in Worcester before moving to Dudley in the 1960's. In 1983, she moved to Weymouth and had lived in Webster since 2005. She was a graduate of Major Beal High School in Shrewsbury.
Mrs. Bates worked for Massachusetts Electric in Worcester, now National Grid, for 12 years. She was a nurse’s aide at Dudley Junior High School for 5 years. She was then the secretary at the R. L. Spahl Plumbing & Heating Company in Dudley for 10 years before retiring.
She enjoyed flower gardening, her daily walks, entertaining and reading.
Funeral services will be private. There are no calling hours. Sitkowski & Malboeuf Funeral Home, 340 School Street, is directing arrangements.
