Delia A. (Gill) Lane, of Florida formerly of West Roxbury passed away on February 2, 2011 at the age of 106.
According to Delia, her secret of longevity was eating healthy, walking 5 miles to school as a child in Ireland, and a lifetime of hard work. Delia came to the United States at the age of 18 on August 8, 1923. When she arrived all U.S. flags were flying at half-mast in recognition of the death of President Warren G. Harding, which occurred that day. Eight years later she became a citizen of the United States, an act which was one of the proudest of her entire life. Delia worked as a homemaker for her large family. She also worked as Sacred Heart School’s school lunch manager from 1954 to 1965. She was a longtime member of the Galway Club and the Irish Social Club, both of West Roxbury.
Delia was the beloved wife of the late John J. Lane. Loving mother of James Lane of CA, Raymond Lane of ME, John Lane and Patricia Raymond both of NY, Christine Feehily of West Roxbury, Robert Lane of WA and the late Eleanor O’Donnell, who had lived in Norwood. She is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.
Delia’s Funeral Mass was celebrated Wednesday February 9, 2011 at St. Theresa of Avila Church.
