John Thomas Hoadley, 81, Northwest Street, Stonington died Sunday at Westerly Hospital where he had been a patient for the past week.
A lifelong resident of Stonington, he was born there on January 12, 1922 one of nine children to Frederick and Mary (Burns) Hoadley. Attending Stonington schools, he graduated with the Class of 1942 from Stonington High School. He later joined the US Coast Guard and served convoy duty in the North Atlantic during World War II.
John was employed for over 40 years at Kellems Division of Harvey Hubbel for over 40 years before retiring in March, 1990.
Mr. Hoadley was a communicant and former Trustee of St. Mary’s Church where he and served there on the Parish Advisory Council and as a Lector. He was also a member of the Nina Council, Knights of Columbus where he had served as Treasurer for 29years and was a member of the former James W. Harvey Post American Legion.
John is survived by his sister-in-law, Rita D. Hoadley of Stonington, his nieces and nephews, Michael Hoadley of Cumberland RI, Corrine Gomes of Pawcatuck, Jeffrey Hoadley of Stonington, Patricia Law of Westerly, and Brian Hoadley of Stonington, and several grandnieces and nephews and great-grandnieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his siblings, Matthew H., Frederick W., Mary E. , William , James “Jimmy”, Anna M., Margaret and Helen Hoadley.
The family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic, on Wednesday from 9:00-9:45am. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Church in Stonington. Burial with military honors will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
