Agatha Cordelia (Mainville) Cloutier, 87, of Westport died January 5, 2004 in Chatham, Mass. She was the devoted wife of the late Professor Edward H. Cloutier for 60 years.
Born at home February 3, 1916, in Oxford, Mass., she was the daughter of Noe David and Rosa deLima Cordelia (Tetreault) Mainville, the ninth of eleven children. She resided in Westport, Mass., for 30 years and was a member of St. John the Baptist Church.
Mrs. Cloutier attended schools in Oxford and Rochdale, graduating from Leicester High School in 1932, continuing on to the Fairchild Institute for Business, in Worcester. She was a choir member of St. Aloysius Church in Rochdale, where her sister Adrienne was the organist. She performed in local Minstrel and Vaudeville shows in the Worcester area. She was also a member of the Holy Name Church choir under the direction of Edward Desrosiers in New Bedford.
Along with her husband, she helped found the Cub Scout troop at St. Lawrence Church in New Bedford, where she was a Den Mother. She also helped found the Brownie and Girl Scout troops at St. Lawrence Church where she was a Leader for many years. She was a member and President of the Infant of Prague Guild at St. Mary's Home in New Bedford. She worked as an executive secretary for various firms in Rochdale and New Bedford, and was executive secretary to the Registrar at Southeastern Massachusetts University (U. Mass. Dartmouth) for 12 years prior to her retirement. She was noted for her skills in sewing, quilting, needlepoint and crochet, and made many beautiful and cherished items for her children, grandchildren and great-grand daughters.
She is survived by two sons Edward J. Cloutier of Marblehead, and Paul R. Cloutier of Westport, and two daughters Nola A. Assad of Yarmouth Port and Ann C. Rosinha of Westport; their spouses Margaret Schroeder Cloutier, Arlene Fuller Cloutier and Shay D. Assad; ten grandchildren, Nicole C. Rabstejnek, P. Phillip Cloutier, Beth Ann Cloutier, Jeanne Marie Cloutier-Turner, Julie Cloutier, Carolyn Norris, Michelle Assad, Christine Assad, Virginia Mattos, and Stephen D. Mattos; and three great-granddaughters Hanna and Abbe Rabstejnek and Kaya Cloutier. She is survived by her sister Gabrielle Sullivan of New Braunfels, Texas, and many nieces and nephews.
Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday January 8, 2004 at 9 AM in St. John the Baptist Church, Westport. Burial will follow in Beech Grove Cemetery. Visiting hours will be at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford on Wednesday January 7, 2004 from 4-7 PM.
