Barbara G. Dermody 80, former resident of Brockton, Ma.Barbara G. (Leach) Dermody, 80, wife of the late Thomas Dermody (of Kilkenny,lreland) passed away in the early hours of Sunday morning at The Life Care Facility of West Bridgewater, where she was in residence since May 2001. Born in Brockton in 1923 in the midst of the Depression, she struggled to overcome physically debilitating childhood tuberculosis and severe poverty to earn a Masters' degree in education from Bridgewater State College. Mrs. Dermody devoted her professional career to meeting the primary educational needs of the children of Quincy for over30 years. She will be fondly remembered for her patience and fostering of a nurturing classroom environment, which has been widely credited with helping hundreds of Quincy students in taking the tentative steps toward academic achievement. Barbara will be remembered for her steadfast determination and absolute resolve in providing for her two young children after the untimely death of her husband, Tom, in 1976.Upon her retirement, she pursued her appreciation for beauty in all its forms from art, collectibles, cooking and spending her greater share of time with family and friends.
She is survived by her son, Thomas of Raynham, MA and his wife, Elizabeth (McCann) Dermody and her daughter, Kathleen (Dermody) Kondratowicz of Sandwich, MA and her husband, John, LCDR of the United States Coast Guard and five grandchildren. Sister of the late William J. and Robert F . Leach. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
