WEBSTER – Mary C. (Moriarty) Canty, 77, of School Street, died Saturday, January 29th, 2011 at the Webster Manor, with all of her children at her side. Her husband of 17 years, Philip T. Canty, died in 1979.
She leaves 10 children, Martin P. Canty of Webster; Sean P. Canty and his wife Jennifer of Boston, Patrick M. Canty, of Cambridge, Colleen A. Canty, Moira A. Cristy and her husband Brian, all of Auburn, Tara A. Bennett and her husband, Michael of New Braintree, Maureen R. Canty and her fiancé Scott Mello, of Hillsborough, CA, Bridget M. Canty of Auburn, Shannon M. LaMarche and her husband Steven of Cataumet; and Timothy J. Canty of Auburn; 8 grandchildren, Philip, Lindsey, Sean, Julia and Ryan Canty, Evan Cristy, and Keon and Kealyn LaMarche; 2 brothers, Francis Moriarty of Southbridge, and John Moriarty of North Truro; 2 sisters, Clare Kalagher of West Springfield, and Barbara Belanger of Southbridge; and many nieces, nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Eleanor Moriarty of Southbridge.
Mary was born and raised in Southbridge, a daughter of Timothy and Esther (LaPlante) Moriarty. She graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Southbridge in 1950. She lived in Dudley for several years with her husband and children, before moving to Webster in 1978.
Mrs. Canty worked as a social worker at the Southbridge Department of Transitional Assistance for many years. She was a member of Saint Louis Church and the Saint Louise League of Catholic Women. She enjoyed singing and was a soprano in the church choir for many years. She was a former president of the Saint Louise PTA. Her greatest joy was being a mother.
The family wishes to thank the staff, care givers and their Mother’s extended family at the Webster Manor, for all of the love and care given to Mary over the last 22 years.
The funeral will be held Tuesday, February 1, from Scanlon Funeral Service, 38 East Main Street, with a Mass at 11:30 AM in Saint Louis Church, 14 Lake Street. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Dudley. Calling hours are from 4:00 to 8:00 PM Monday, January, 31, in the funeral home.
