Stephen F. Cammarata, a long-time Medford resident and US Marine Corps veteran of World War II, died Wednesday at the Bedford VA Hospital after a long illness. He was 89.
Born and raised in East Boston, he was the son of the late Frank and the late Angelina (Rubino) Cammarata. Stephen enlisted in the Marine Corps during World War II and served bravely through the Pacific participating in battle at Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands and Pelelieu. After the war he served as a firefighter for the City of Medford and was forced to retire early due to injuries in the line of duty. He was a devoted family man and enjoyed the company of his many relatives and friends. Like many of his generation he was possessed of a strong spirit of commitment and service. He will be missed by all who knew him.
The beloved husband of Elizabeth A. (Rapallo) Cammarata, he was a devoted father to Stephen P. Cammarata and his wife Susan of North Andover, Jan Cammarata of Stoneham, Judith Landry and her husband Dave of Salem, NH. He leaves his loving grandchildren: Eric Vinneau and his wife Elaine, Rene Cammarata Hamilton and her husband Mike, Lauren, Justin and Nicholas Cammarata, Michael, Caitlin, and Patrick MacDonald and David Landry as well as three great-grandchildren. He was a dear brother to Jasper Cammarata, the late Marian Marrone, Joseph, James, Frank and Edward Cammarata.
His funeral will be from the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main St., Medford, Monday, January 31st at 8 AM followed by a funeral mass celebrated in St. Joseph Church, 118 High Street, Medford, at 9 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend and may visit with the family Sunday 4 - 8. Services will conclude with burial at Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford.
