James P. “Jimmy” Whelan, passed away at the Brigham-Womens Hospital in Boston, following a extended illness. The husband of Rita J. (D´Amore) he was sixty years old.
Born in New York he was the son of the late Catherine (Sulivan) and Laurence Whelan, raised and educated in Somerville and Medford, Jim graduated Medford High School in 1961. He has made his home in North Reading and Reading over the last twenty-five years.
Jim owned and operated the Whelan Cafe in Somerville for a number of years, and later started United Steel Erection of Everett, which helped build many of Boston´s landmarks over the last decade. He recently retired from the William A. Berry & Son, Inc. Construction company as the safety director. Jimmy was devoted to his family and being with his grandchildren, he was a avid golfer and great Boston sports fan. He will be sadly missed not only by his family but by his many colleauges and friends.
His funeral will be held from the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main St. Medford on Tuesday, Januery 6, at 10 a.m., followed by a funeral mass celebrated in St. Joseph church, 118 High St. Medford at 11. Realtives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Services will conclude with burial at Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford.
Visiting hours at the funeral home are on Monday, January 5, from 4 thru 8.
