Frederick A. McCarthy, 85, of Lawrence died on Saturday January 22, 2011 at Lawrence General Hospital. Mr McCarthy was born and raised in Lawrence and was a 1942 graduate of Lawrence High School and a 1950 graduate of St Anslem College Manchester, NH. He served with The US Navy during WW II as a Pharmacist Mate and participated in The Normandy Invasion. He worked as a chemist for many years and from 1971 until his retirement, he owned and operated McCarthy Real Estate and Appraisal Services. He was a member of St Michaels Parish, North Andover. Fred was also a member of North Andover Council of The Knights of Columbus and a member of The North Andover VFW . He enjoyed golfing and, especially, loved being surrounded by his family.
The widower of Patricia C. (McGravey) McCarthy, his family members include his daughters, Maureen C. and her husband, Stephen Doherty of N. Andover, Christine and her husband, Steven Robichaud of Methuen and Kathleen and her husband, Wayne Borden of Methuen. He leaves his sons, Kevin and his wife, Kimberly McCarthy of Methuen, Frederick and his wife, Maureen McCarthy of N. Andover and Lt. Col. William and his wife Hyun Jung McCarthy of San Antonio, TX. He also leaves his nephew and nieces who he raised, Brian and his wife, Barbara McCarthy of Methuen, Mary Lou McCarthy of Methuen and Joan Marie and her husband, Glenn MacLauchlan of Methuen. He leaves his grandchildren, Dr. Meaghan, Timothy, Daniel and Matthew Doherty, Kelly, Christopher and Kevin McCarthy and Katelyn Maroon, Alison, Laura and Sarah McCarthy, Michael, Alyssa and Joseph Robichaud, Wayne, Ryan and Jonathan Borden, Brianna and Bridget McCarthy, Nicholas, Daniel, Jessica and Kelsey MacLauchlan and his great grandchildren, Sienna, Avaree and Matthew. Fred leaves his sister, Claire Garden of Helendale, CA and sister-in-law, Catherine McCarthy of N. Andover and many nieces and nephews. he was the son of the late Frederick and Mary (Hannigan) McCarthy and was pre-deceased by his brothers, John and Robert McCarthy and grandson, David Doherty and niece, Jacqueline McCarthy.
Calling hours will be on Thursday January 27, 2011 from 3 to 7 pm at The Charles F. Dewhirst Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Methuen. A Funeral Mass will be on Friday January 28 at 10:00am in St Michaels Church, North Andover. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Methuen.
