Obituary

Hazel P. (Bassett) Marlow, 89, of Sandown, NH, the eldest of the Bassett family, passed away on Sunday January 23, 2011 in the Parkland Medical Center, Derry, NH. She was born in Sandown on May 31, 1921, daughter of the late Raymond and Priscilla (Knights) Bassett. Following her graduation from Keene Teacher's college she spent time in Vermont teaching and also raising her family. She returned to Sandown in 1981 and immediately became a dedicated supporter of the Sandown Public Library. She was a member of the Friends of the Library for over 25 years and had served the Town as a Library Trustee for two terms and worked at the Sandown Public Library for over 18 years. Hazel was also an active member of St. Matthews United Methodist Church, the Timberlane Hampstead Sanborn Retired Educators Association, the Sandown 60+ Club and the Old Meeting House Historical Association of Sandown. In 2009, for all her selfless hard work and countless hours of volunteering Hazel was honored as Sandown Citizen of the year. She enjoyed gardening and canning, feeding and caring for the birds, watching the Red Sox and taking care of her grandchildren.

A devoted mother and grandmother she is survived by five children; Linda Dempsey and her husband Jack of Gastonia, NC, Ronald Marlow and his wife Kathy of Orlando, FL, Alan Marlow and his wife Cheryl of Weston, MA, Sandra Fitzgerald of Mansfield, MA and Sharon Gibbons and her husband Robert, also of Mansfield. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, two sisters; Martha Sargent of Springfield, VA and Eleanor Bassett of Sandown, eight brothers; Charles Bassett of Naples, FL, Donald Bassett of Northwood, NH, Wendell Bassett of Epsom, NH, William Bassett of Greensboro, GA, David Bassett of Hampstead, Kenneth Bassett, Carroll Bassett and Irving Bassett, all of Sandown and by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Francis M. Marlow.

Calling hours were held on Thursday, January 27, 2011 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM in the Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch Street, Derry. Funeral services were held on Friday at 11:00 AM in St. Matthew's United Methodist Church, Sandown. The burial will be held in spring in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Putney, VT.
