Mary L Burke, 77, of Londonderry, NH passed away peacefully at her home on January 24, 2011 after a brief illness. Mrs. Burke was born in Oneonta, NY on May 13, 1933, the daughter of the late William and Bertha (Carpenter) Slavin. She graduated with a degree in Home Economics Education from SUNY at Oneonta. In 1956 she married John G. Burke of Middlebury, Vermont. The couple resided in Black River, New York for many years before moving to Londonderry, NH in 1984.
During her life time, Mrs. Burke was employed as a school teacher for the NY School System in Carthage, NY and later worked as a Home Economist for the Jefferson County Cooperative Extension, retiring in 1984. In addition to the Londonderry United Methodist Church, she was a member of the Londonderry Art Council. An avid water color artist, she shared a love for all the arts.
She is survived by her son, James J. Burke and his wife Cindy of Northfield, VT, two daughters, Holly Burke-Gordon and Jill Burke, both of Londonderry, four grandchildren, Danielle Gordon, Nathan, Timothy and Chelsea Burke, her brother, William Slavin of San Francisco, CA, also by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, John G. Burke in 2008 and by her sister, Sylvia Davidovitch.
Calling hours were held on Friday January 28, 2011 from 5 - 8pm in the Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 290 Mammoth Rd., Londonderry. Funeral services were held on Saturday at 11:00am in the Londonderry United Methodist Church, Londonderry. Burial will be in the Spring in Middlebury Cemetery, Middlebury, VT. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Londonderry United Methodist Church, 258 Mammoth Rd., Londonderry, NH 03053.
