Edmund A. Harrington, 89, of Dartmouth, formerly of New Bedford died January 3, 2004 at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness.
He was the husband of Isabelle (Gomes) Harrington. In May 2003, Mr. & Mrs. Harrington celebrated 60 years of marriage at the Heritage of Dartmouth with family and friends.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Jeremiah and Ellen (Cronin) Harrington, he had lived in New Bedford for most of his life before moving to Dartmouth 5 years ago. He was a graduate of Holy Family High School, Class of 1932, and had attended Boston College and Babson College.
He was a communicant of St. Lawrence Church.
After graduating from high school, Mr. Harrington worked at the Firestone Mill and joined the New Bedford Police Department as a cadet in 1938. After his military service during World War II, he rejoined the Police Department and was employed for many years before retiring as Captain in 1978.
During World War II, Mr. Harrington served in the U.S. Army, participating in the battles of Normandy and Northern France. He was a recipient of the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Campaign ribbon with 2 battle stars. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Andrews-Dahill Post 1531 and the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, and was a former president of the St. Francis of Assisi Senior Citizen's Club.
He was an avid reader and enjoyed doing the Daily Jumble in the newspaper. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends.
Survivors include his wife; 2 sons, Edmund A. Harrington,Jr., and Rev. Kevin J. Harrington, all of New Bedford; a daughter, Gloria E. Healey, and her husband Walter, of Lakeville; 2 daughters-in-law, Ronnie Harrington of Belmont and Patricia Harrington of Mattapoisett; a brother, James Harrington of New Bedford; 8 grandchildren, Jeremy Harrington, Alison Harrington, Samantha Harrington, Patricia Harrington, Kelly Harrington, Ryan Healey, Tara Healey and Meaghan Healey; and many nieces and nephews.
He was the father of the late Barry J. Harrington, and brother of the late John Harrington, Patrick Harrington and Francis Harrington.
