Esther “Evelyn” Messier, 91, formerly of Auburn Avenue, Johnston, died Saturday, January 22, 2011 at the Tockwotton Home in Providence. She was the wife of R. Laurent “Larry” Messier. They had been married for 72 years.
Born in Willamanitc, CT, she was the daughter of the late Emile J. and Eva Marie (Martin) Denis. She had lived in Johnston for over 50 years. Her family remembers her as the most wonderful wife, mother and grandmother anyone could have. She was the kindest, most loving person. She gave totally of herself to her family and her friends. She loved to sing and she knew the words to every song.
Mrs. Messier attended nursing school at the age of 50 as it was always her desire to become a nurse. She graduated from the RI School of Nursing and retired from Hopkins Health Center as the Night Supervisor in 1983. She had also been a Private Duty Nurse. She was a former member of the Slater Park Lawn Bowling Club and the RI InSight Organization.
Besides her husband she is survived by her daughter Lucille J. Thayer of Warwick, her two sons, Lynn L. Messier of Maine and Leo D. Messier of Narragansett, eleven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. She was the mother of the late Laura E. O’Donnell and sister of the late Rev. Paul Denis, MS and Roger Denis.
Funeral Tuesday at 9:30am from the ANDERSON-WINFIELD Funeral Home, Route 44 at Greenville Common, Greenville. Mass of Christian Burial at 10am in St. Thomas Church, 65 Fruit Hill Avenue, Providence. Visitation Tuesday 8:30-9:30am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Tockwotton Home, 75 East Street, Providence, Ri 02903
