Louis A. Rivers Jr. 62, of Brewster, formerly of Provincetown died Wednesday January 19, 2011, after a long illness. Born in Hyannis, on September 7, 1948, he was the son of the late Louis A. Sr. and M. Marjorie Rivers. Louis was the husband of Joyce Woods Rivers to whom he was married since May 10, 1969. Louis and his wife Joyce were high school sweethearts and graduated from Provincetown High School together in 1966. Following high school, during the Vietnam era, Mr. Rivers enlisted in the Navy. He was stationed in Guantanamo Bay and Charleston, SC . Upon returning to Provincetown , he fished aboard the Johnny O. He later was able to purchase the boat which he owned until coming ashore in 1983. Shortly thereafter he started Rivers Research, a company that investigated legal documents for private clients. He retired from that business earlier this month. He and his family moved to Brewster in 1999.
Mr. Rivers also enjoyed his job tending bar which was a labor of love. He enjoyed the work but looked forward to the people he met along the way. He first tended bar as a young man aboard the Portuguese Princess. Along with his wife, he worked for many years at the Sea View restaurant, currently Bubula’s as a bartender. He also worked more recently at the Governor Bradford. He was an outgoing man who enjoyed cooking and entertaining. He was a member of the Highland Golf Club for over 30 years and he has been a member of Captains Golf Course in Brewster for more than 10 years. Like his father before him, he was a long time member of the Provincetown Lions Club. He joined the Provincetown Lions Club in 1974 and held every office in the club, including President four times and was on the Board of Directors for 30 years. He served the district as Zone Chairman in 1996-97 and has attended more than 20 Mid-Winter and State conventions. Like his father, Lion Louis, Jr. was the recipient of the Melvin Jones award. He also received the Massachusetts Lions Eye Research Fund, Inc. Sight Award. He was the inspiration for the District's PRIDE award when he took over as President for the 2008-2009 Lions year and attended every club and district function, as well as going to other clubs meetings. He was always committed to raising money for both Lions International and the local Provincetown Lions Club. He was also a member of the Walter Welsh Council of the Knights of Columbus in Provincetown
Besides his best friend and wife, Joyce, he leaves his beloved son Louis A. Rivers III and his wife Jennifer of Attleboro, his loving granddaughter Emily Rivers, his cousin Cathy Eastman and her husband Willie of Gloucester, his Uncle Jack and Aunt Anna Rivers of Brunswick, GA, several nieces, nephews and cousins and his beloved in-laws. He was the brother of the late Sandra Rivers.
A Funeral Mass will take place on Monday January 24, 2011 at 10:30am in St. Peter the Apostle Church 11 Prince St. Provincetown . Visiting hours are Sunday January 23, 2011 from 3:00-6:00pm at the Gately McHoul Funeral Home 94 Harry Kemp Way Provincetown .
