Benjamin C. Boynton, 84, a lifelong resident of Mansfield passed away on Sunday January 16, 2011 at the Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro. He was the beloved husband of Ruth L. (Follett) Boynton to whom he was wed on February 9, 1946.
Born in Mansfield, MA on May 14, 1926, he was a son of the late Charles E., Sr. and Thelma O. (Knowles) Boynton.
Ben grew up in Mansfield and was educated in Mansfield public schools. In 1998, Mr. Boynton retired from the Peterson Machine Co. in Stoughton where he had worked in the maintenance department for 11 years.
The founder and a charter member of the Mansfield Lodge of Elks # 2683, he had the distinction of being the clubs first Exalted Ruler. He was also a former member and past Exalted Ruler of the North Attleboro Lodge of Elks # 1011.
A former member of the Mansfield Congregational Church, Ben was also an active member and served on the Board of Directors for the Mansfield Council on Aging. An avid woodworker, Mr. Boynton enjoyed projects around his home and also at the Elks Hall.
In addition to his beloved wife of nearly 65 years he is survived by his devoted children Linda L. Bradbury of Shreveport, Louisiana, Lester F. Boynton and his wife Karen of Las Vegas, Nevada and Gerald A. Boynton and his wife Kathleen of Republic, Washington. The dear brother of Charles Ernest Boynton, Jr. of Huntsville, Alabama, Barbara Jones of Mansfield, Irving Boynton of San Antonio, Florida, Josephine Gougeon of Bradford, Vermont, Marie West of South Yarmouth, Helen Heffernan of Attleboro, Alice Proulx of Norton and the late Lillian Demers, Walter Boynton, Mildred Corey, Esther Boynton, Doris Lesperance and Daniel Boynton, Mr. Boynton is also survived by his cherished 7 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Saturday January 22nd at 10:00 A.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home 55 North Main St. Mansfield. Burial will follow in the Spring Brook Cemetery, Mansfield.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday January 21st from 5-8 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, Ben’s family has requested that donations in his memory be made to the Mansfield Fire Department Ambulance Fund 10 Plymouth St. Mansfield, MA 02048.
