Paul Silveira, 60, of Mattapoisett passed away Friday January 14, 2011 at Beth Israel-Deaconess Medical Center in Boston in the presence of his family and close friends. A Detective Lieutenant with the Mattapoisett Police Department, Paul suffered a line of duty injury.
Paul was the beloved husband of Jane (Santos) Silveira for thirty-eight years. He was also the loving father of daughter Tracy and son Paul. Additionally he was the proud grandfather of Mason Silveira. He is survived by his mother Adeline (Vieira) Silveira, two brothers Wayne, Mark and his wife Diane, and several nieces and nephews. Paul is predeceased by his father Sidney Alton Silveira and his granddaughter Chelsea Olivia Silveira.
Paul was a member of the Air National Guard from 1969 to 1984 working as an Air Security Officer stationed at Otis Air Force Base. He joined the Mattapoisett Police Department in 1984 as a patrolman and was assigned as a Detective in 1992. He was promoted to Detective Sergeant in 2001 and to Lieutenant in 2004.
Paul was dedicated to his profession and proud of his accomplishments with the department. He had a great sense of loyalty and respect for his colleagues at work and earned the respect of other public safety organizations and professionals. He was an active member of the Southeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council Dive Team (SEMLEC) serving in the capacity of certified boat operator. Paul also served as assistant harbormaster in Mattapoisett.
Paul was happiest spending time with the love of his life Jane and his family. He spent a great deal of time relaxing near or on the ocean where he enjoyed the serene effect it had on his well-being. Paul loved the tranquility of sailing saying, “Sailing gets me away from the mad world; The ocean is peace!”
Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday January 19, 2011 from 4-8 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home for Funerals, 50 County Rd. Rt. 6, Mattapoisett. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Anthony’s Church, 22 Barstow St., Mattapoisett on Thursday, January 20, 2011 at 9 AM, followed by graveside burial services at Cushing Cemetery.
