Obituary

Alfred “Al” Garron, Jr., 78, of Derry, NH died on Saturday, January 15, 2011 at his home. He was born in Malden, MA on June 12, 1932, son of the late Alfred M and Winifred (Nickerson) Garron, Sr. Al served in the US Army as a Sergeant 1st Class. He retired from the Army after 20 plus years, two tours of duty in Korea, two in Berlin and one in Vietnam. During that time he received the purple heart, bronze star and many other accommodation awards and medals. Following his discharge he has been a Derry resident since 1969. He began selling insurance and then later worked for the Goff’s Falls Road Post Office in Manchester, NH, retiring after 12 years. He was very active in the community, especially youth sports, little league and had a hand in the making of Bastek Field. He loved sports, baseball, football and especially golf and was a member of Hoodcroft Country Club in Derry. Al also attended night school while working and was very proud of his business degree he earned. He was past commander of VFW Post 1617 and was a member of the American Legion. He was a loving caring man who would do whatever he could to help people he saw who were in need.

A loving husband and tremendous father, he leaves behind his wife of 53 years, Shirley Garron of Derry, two daughters; Nancy Huber and her husband Paul of Richmond, VA and Cathy Leaver of Weare, NH, a sister, Dolores Johnston of Montague, PEI and also many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Dennis Garron in 1993, a sister; Jean Hawe and two brothers; Douglas and Ronald Garron.

Visiting hours were held from 4-8pm on Monday, January 17, 2011 in the Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch St., Derry. A funeral service was held at 1:30pm on Tuesday in the funeral home. Burial with military honors was held on Wednesday at 1:00pm in the Forest Hill Cemetery, E. Derry. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the National Kidney Foundation 30 East 33rd St., New York, NY 10016, to Compassionate Care Hospice, 25 Nashua Rd Unit E3, Londonderry, NH 03053 or to the Wounded Warrior Project 7020 AC Skinner Pkwy, Suite 100.
