Joseph M. Gomes, 86, of New Bedford died December 28, 2003 at Lourdes Memorial Hospital in Willingboro, New Jersey after a brief illness.
He was the husband of the late Guimar "Margie" (Cruz) Gomes, and son of the late Manuel and Frances Gomes.
Mr. Gomes was born in Fairhaven and lived in Fairhaven and New Bedford all of his life.
He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Assumption Church, where he was a member of the O.L.O.A. Club.
Mr. Gomes was formerly employed by Star Market for many years until his retirement.
He served in the US Army during World War II and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Fort Phoenix Post 2892 in Fairhaven.
Mr. Gomes was a graduate of Fairhaven High School where he played football and ran track.
He was an avid sports fan.
Survivors include his 2 daughters, Ann F. Clark, and her fiancé Kenneth Joseph, of Willingboro, NJ and Justa M. Brooks, and her husband Clarence Brooks, of Pembroke Pines, FL; 4 grandchildren, David Clark, Daniel Clark, Jason Brooks and Adrienne Brooks; 3 great-grandchildren, Jordan Clark, Brice Clark and Joshua Clark; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was the brother of the late James Gomes, John Gomes and Mary Pimentel.

Interment St. John's Cemetery.
