NORTH DARTMOUTH — Judith E. (Smith) Sylvia, of North Dartmouth, passed away at home on Tues. Jan. 4, 2011. She was the wife of Paul F. Sylvia.
Born in New Bedford, daughter of the late Susan T. (Chace) Whittaker and the late William C. Smith. Judy was a graduate of Dartmouth High School and Truesdale Hospital School of Nursing. She trained as a stewardess for Pan American World Airways. Based in New York, she flew to major cities of Europe, Africa and the FarEast as far as Hong Kong. A talented nurse for many years, she retired from St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford.
A member of Grace Episcopal Church, she served on the altar guild, sang in the choir and was a member of the Mayflower Society.
She is survived by her husband, Paul; two daughters, Bethany T. Sylvia of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Polly F. Sylvia of Brooklyn, N.Y.; her sister, Betty L. O'Connor of Mattapoisett, and nieces and nephews.
Judy was the sister of the late William L. Smith.
Visitation will take place on Monday, Jan. 10th from 5-7 p.m., in the Wilson Chapel, 479 County St., New Bedford. Her memorial service will be on Tuesday, Jan. 11, at 12 noon at Grace Church, 422 County St., NB. It is suggested remembrances be made in her name to the Scholarship Fund of Grace Church, 133 School St., N.B. 02740. Burial is private.
