TOWNSEND - Walter D. Baro, 75, a well known member of the ceramic crafts community, diedunexpectedly Saturday evening, Feb. 2, at the Deaconess-Nashoba Hospital in Ayer. He was thehusband of Rose (Marotto) Baro, with whom he had celebrated a 57th wedding anniversary thispast June 3rd.
He was born in Somerville, April 10, 1926, a son of the late William and Agnes (Short) Baro. He was raised in Somerville, and lived in Tewksbury, East Billerica, Westford, before moving toTownsend in 1985.
During WWII, he served in the U.S.Navy, but was recalled and honorably discharged from theservice upon the death of both parents.
He retired from the A.W. Bannister Company in Cambridge in 1985, where he was employed asa sheet metal mechanic. Since then, he had worked full time with his wife and co-founder ofBaro’s Ceramic Supply Company, which they had founded in 1948 in East Billerica. Theircompany has now expanded to three locations in East Chelmsford and Townsend. He also co-founded the W. Baro and Sons Auto Repair and Towing company in Townsend.
Mr. Baro enjoyed many skills and hobbies, especially R.V. travel in the U.S. and boating onLake Winnipasaukee from his summer home Center Harbor, NH.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Priscilla M. and her husbandRobert Ratte of Billerica, two sons and daughters-in-law, William W. and his wife Karen (Squires) Baroof Townsend, Arthur D. and his wife Joan (Speck) Baro of Tewksbury, one sister, MargaretHenry of N.C., 8 grandchildren, William Baro Jr. of Fla., Edward Baro of Boxboro, Jamie Baroof Townsend, CarrieAnn Baro of Leominster, Robert Ratte of Lowell, Deborah Ratte-Goodall,DDS, of Chelmsford, Michele and David Baro both of Tewksbury, and 9 great grandchildren.
His Funeral Mass was celebrated Tuesday , Feb. 5, in St. William’s Church, followed by interment inTewksbury Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to the American Heart Assn., 20 Speen St.,Framingham, MA 01701, will be appreciated.
