Obituary

ANNISQUAM: Stillman P. Hilton, 84, formerly of Leonard Street, died Saturday, January 01, 2011 in the Addison Gilbert Hospital following an extended illness.
Born in Winchester on October 1, 1926, he was the son of the late Carroll S. and Ruth E. (Davidson) Hilton. He had resided in Winchester, Brooklyn, New York and Cambridge for many years before moving to Annisquam in 1965. He was a graduate of Winchester High School class of 1944 and Bowdoin College in Brunswick, ME. He had also received a Master of Science degree in Library Science from the Columbia School of Library Science in New York City. A U.S. Navy veteran of both World War II and the Korean War, he was honorably discharged in July 1952.
Stillman was employed as the head librarian at the Sawyer Free Library in Gloucester for twenty-six years before retiring in 1991. He had also worked as a librarian in Brooklyn, Medford, Arlington and Everett for several years. He was a member of the standing committee of the Annisquam Village Church 1967-1970 & 1972-1975 and served as the treasurer for the Greater Boston Public Library Administrators from 1963 -1965.
He is survived by several cousins, including Martha D. Hooper of Annisquam, Marilyn Scott of Golden Eagle, IL, Nancy Fenno of Rochester, NY, Janice Davidson of AZ, Rick Davidson and Raylene Newbury both of Freedom, NH, Marcia Eaton of Kattskill Bay, NY and David Eaton of Attleboro. He is also predeceased by his cousins Carol Bartlett of Gansevoort, NY and Paul Eaton of Freedom, NH.
His funeral services will be privately held in the Wildwood Cemetery in Winchester at the convenience of the family. Expressions of sympathy may be made in his memory to the Sawyer Free Library, 2 Dale Ave., Gloucester, MA 01930. Arrangements are under the direction of the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle St., Gloucester.
