Katherine Mathews, 79, of Fitzgerald died Friday, December 31, 2010 at her residence.
Funeral services will be held at 3 P.M., Monday, January 3, 2011, at the Holiness Baptist Church Campground in Douglas with Rev. Larry Bowen, Rev. Winston Wright, and Rev. Donnie Sloan officiating. Interment will follow in the New Hope Cemetery in Ambrose. The family will receive friends from 6-9 Sunday evening at the Paulk Funeral Home in Fitzgerald.
Mrs. Mathews was born October 27, 1931 in Irwin County, Georgia to the late Alexander A. and Ellen Key Rowell. She was a 1950 graduate of Irwin County High School and a homemaker. She was a member of New Bethel Holiness Baptist Church. Mrs. Mathews was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother and was very devoted to her family.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years: Kenneth Mathews of Fitzgerald; daughters and sons-in-law: Judy & Chris Hilton of Arabi and Janet & Freddie Swanson of Douglas; seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; two sisters: Leacy Ann Walker of Tifton and Elaine Holley of Fitzgerald; one brother: Tom Rowell of Ocilla, as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers: H.L. Rowell, John W. Rowell, Aubrey Rowell, and Robert Rowell and three sisters: Rachel Shrouder, Martha Troupe, and Opal Rowell.
