David Charles Schunk, 54, died Tuesday, December 28, 2010. His memorial service will take place at 2:30 p.m. today, January 2, 2011, at Decatur First United Methodist Church, where he was a member.
Dave was born on February 2, 1956 in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from John Hersey High School in 1974 and from Purdue University with honors in 1978. Dave then earned a Master’s degree of Management, with distinction, from Northwestern University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management in 1985 while working for The People’s Gas, Light and Coke Company in Chicago. A new job with what is now Deloitte Financial Advisory Services brought him to Atlanta in 1990. December 2, 2010 marked his 25th year with the firm. In Atlanta, he met his wife, Laurie, the daughter of Frank and Janet McGill of Tifton. They were married 18 years and have three sons, Henry (15), Graham (13) and Ian (10). Dave found great fulfillment in his work as a Director of Valuation Services with Deloitte. He was diligent and conscientious in meeting the needs of his clients, always maintaining the positive, easy-going manner for which he was known.
Dave was an avid tennis player, a high school champ, having helped his father run The Racket Club in Crystal Lake, Illinois as a teenager. One of his greatest pleasures was seeing his sons come to love the game as much as he did. David will be remembered as a man of great strength, optimism and faith. He was an active member of his church and deeply believed in the power of God’s love. He had a sweet and gentle spirit that endeared him to family and friends. The courage with which he fought an 18-month battle with brain cancer is a testament to his faith in God and the love he had for his family. They loved him back. He was their hero.
In addition to his wife and sons, David is survived by his father, Charles Schunk of San Diego, California; his mother Marianne Hicks Winslow of Phoenix, Arizona; and a multitude of in-laws! He was preceded in death by his sister, Laura.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Boy Scout Troop #6, 209 North Candler Street, Decatur, GA 30030, or to the church or charity of your choice.
