TAUNTON – Manuel Jose Guerreiro, 84, formerly of Portugal, died at the New Bedford Rehabilitation Hospital on Dec. 29, 2010.
A Taunton resident since 2006, he was the husband of Angelina (Ferro) Guerreiro, to whom he was married for the past sixty-one years.
Born in Pechao, Algarve, Portugal, he was the son of the late Joao G. Monte-Arroio and Maria da Conceicao.
A veteran of the Portuguese Army, Mr. Guerreiro lived in Angola, Mozambique, and Durban, South Africa, moving to the New Bedford, MA in 1970.
In 1994, he moved back to Portugal, until returning to U.S. in 2006.
A carpenter by trade, he was a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, Local 1305, the United Fishermen’s Club of New Bedford, and the Sporting Club Olhanense in Portugal.
He was a communicant of Our Lady of Carmel Church in New Bedford and St. Anthony Church in Taunton.
Mr. Guerreiro enjoyed gardening and woodworking, and especially liked working with a lathe.
A loving husband and devoted father, he was happiest when spending time with family and friends, and helping neighbors.
In addition to his wife of Taunton, he leaves his daughter, Joselina F. Guerreiro of Taunton; and many nieces and nephews, both here and in Portugal.
He was also the brother of the late Custodia J., Jose, and Joao Guerreiro, and Eduardo G. and Firmino G. Monte-Arroio.
His funeral will be held from the Silva Funeral Home, 80 Broadway on Monday Jan. 3rd at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at St. Anthony Church at 10 a.m.
Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
Calling Hours will be held at the funeral home on Sunday, Jan. 2nd from 5 to 8 p.m.
