Obituary


Iris J. (Gasson) Covino a long-time Somerville resident died Tuesday at Massachusetts General Hospital after a brief illness. She was 90.

Born and raised in London, England, she was the daughter of the late Frederick and the late Irene (Hatley) Gasson. Iris lived in London during World War II, bravely and resolutely living through the blitz. She met an American soldier serving with the 8th Army Air Corps and eventually married him in 1944. When the war ended she joined her husband, Anthony, on his return to the US and settled with him in Somerville to begin their family. Iris was always devoted to her four sons and their families as well as her parish community of St. Ann in Somerville. There she was active for over 30 years in the Cub Scout pack serving in various capacities, earning the Silver Beaver Award. For over 20 years she was involved in the parish’s religious education program and served as the programs Director during the pastorate of Fr. Casey. Iris enjoyed the company of her large family and friends and will be missed by all who knew her.


The beloved wife of the late Atty. Anthony A. Covino. She was a loving mother to Anthony Covino and his wife Virginia of Biddeford, ME, Gerald Covino (formerly of Burlington) and his companion Rosemary Mezzocchi of Hollis, NH, Robert Covino and his wife Eleanor of Arlington, Michael Covino and his wife Diane of Somerville. She was a devoted grandmother to David, Anne Marie, Jennifer, Alyson, James, William, Michael and a devoted great-grandmother of Maura, Donovan and Reagan. She leaves her dear sister of Hazel Reynolds of Brewster, the late George Merrick, Pat Ede, Stella Thornton, Harold F.R. Gasson and Vera Davis, all of England and is survived by many dear nieces and nephews.

Her funeral will be from the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main St., Medford, Tuesday, December 28th at 10 AM followed by a funeral mass celebrated in St. Ann Church, 399 Medford Street, Somerville, at 11 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours Monday 4 - 8. Services will conclude with burial at Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge.
