GLOUCESTER: Clarence E. “Laney” Lane, Jr., 83, of 3 Curtis Square, died Thursday, December 23, 2010 in the Kaplan Family Hospice House, Danvers following an extended illness. He was the husband of Marion R. (Jernberg) Lane.
Born in Gloucester on June 1, 1927, he was the son of the late Clarence E., Sr. and Gertrude (Doane) Lane. He was a graduate of the Gloucester High School class of 1945, where he was Captain of the ROTC.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he served in the Military Police in Vienna, Austria and was honorably discharged in March of 1947.
Upon his return, he entered the Beverly Industrial Trade School at the former United Shoe Machinery Corporation, where he and Marion met in 1947. Prior to opening Lane’s Appliance Service in 1964, he had worked for the former Morton’s Appliance.
He was a past commander of the Edward Peterson, Post #98 American Legion of Rockport and former member of the Gloucester Lodge of Elk No. 892, the Vittori-Rocci Post #56 of Beverly, as well as the Tyrian-Ashler-Acacia Lodge, A.F. & A.M.
Laney was known to be a jack-of-all-trades and enjoyed many activities including photography, golfing, gardening, cooking and especially dancing with his wife. He and Marion loved to travel. They toured the United States and abroad. They especially enjoyed trips to Europe, having visited areas where he was stationed during World War II. Laney was a loving and devoted husband and father and took great joy in spending time with his grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.
In addition to his wife of sixty years, he is survived by his children, Lois A., wife of Charles Wheaton, Diane J., wife of Donald Amero, Steven A. Lane, Douglas B. Lane and Judith M., wife of Domenic Francis; six grandchildren, Kerry L. Amero, Dylan, Julia and Sophia Lane, Jesse and Sara Francis; a sister, Shirley I., wife of Domingoes Cecilio; several nieces, nephews and many dear friends. He was also predeceased by a sister and brother-in-law, Pauline and Jack Wederquist.
His funeral service will be held on Wednesday morning in the Gloucester United Methodist Church, 436 Washington Street, Gloucester at 10 a.m. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday in the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester from 4 – 8 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. Interment will be held privately in the Spring Street Cemetery, Essex. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in his memory to the Cape Ann Animal Aid, 260 Main St., Gloucester, MA 01930 or the Hospice of the North Shore, 75 Sylvan St., Suite B-102, Danvers, MA 01923.
