Obituary

Arthur Joseph Marchand, age 85, passed away peacefully Friday, December 24th at Salemhaven.

He was born February 17, 1925 in Methuen MA and was a life long resident of Lawrence, MA. He was the son of the late Oscar and Anita (Talbot) Marchand. Arthur attended St Theresa’s Grammar School and received his education in the Methuen School system. A WWII veteran, Arthur enlisted and served in the United States Navy from July of 1942 and was honorably discharged March of 1946. He was assigned to the USS Anthedon a Naval Sub tender (nicked-named “the Green Hornet”) serving in Australia, New Guinea, Hawaii, and the Philippines. Arthur received the Asiatic Pacific Campaign ribbon, the Philippines Liberation Ribbon along with the Victory, Good Conduct and the American Area Ribbons.

Arthur worked for various markets in Lawrence starting with his father’s Associated Grocer store where he learned to cut meat. Arthur joined Stop & Shop in 1961 where he spent 30 years as a meat cutter. He help founded Down East Fish & Chips of Lawrence with his Wife and Father. Arthur was a life long member of St Anne’s Parish in Lawrence MA until its closing. He was the past president of St Anne’s Holy Name, a member of St Vincent DePaul society, and a 4th Degree member of the Knight of Columbus Father O’Donnell Assembly Lawrence Council 67. Arthur is currently a member of Sts. Mary and Joseph Parish of Salem NH. He was a member of The VFW Post 8546, and the Franco American Post 1.

During retirement, Arthur enjoyed gardening, cribbage, 45’s and the Red Sox’s. Arthur was always making benches, wishing wells and Christmas soldiers which he gave as gifts to his family. Arthur loved traveling to Prince Edward Island where he had a summer home.

Arthur was predeceased by his brothers, Ernest, Roland, Amie and a sister Joan (McCarthy).

Arthur is survived by his wife of 60 years, Beryl (Perry) Marchand, and sons Paul and his wife Kate (Ewing) of Salem, NH and Roger and his fiancé Kim Dube of Hampstead, NH. He has 6 grandchildren, Christopher, Michael, Ryan, Ashlee, Corrina and Garrett. He also has 4 great grand children and many nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, Dec. 28 at 10 AM at St. Joseph Church Salem, NH. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart cemetery, Andover, MA. Calling hours will be Monday, Dec. 27 from 4-8 PM at Douglas & Johnson Funeral Home, 214 Main Street, Salem, NH.
