EAST BROOKFIELD: Leona L. (Paquette) Monkley 95 formerly of 160 No.Brookfield Rd., E.Brookfield, died Tuesday Dec. 21 at UMASS Memorial Medical Center in Worcester.
She was the wife of Allen A. Monkley who died in 1998. She leaves her daughters Gail A. Daoust and her husband Rene of Leicester and Marsha E. Holm and her husband Daniel of Oakham, four grandchildren Jeff Daoust and his wife Sue of Amherst, N.Y., Andrea Figueroa and her husband Ben of Holden, Kimberly Langhill of W.Boylston and Caine Letendre and his wife Jessica of Rutland, eight great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her grandson Matthew Atchue in 1986, and several brothers and sisters.
Leona worked at Coppus Engineering in Worcester for many years before her retirement. She was born in Souris, Prince Edward Island, Canada the daughter of Bartholomew and Evangeline (McCormick) Paquette, and later served her country and was the first woman to enlist in the Canadian Army in Montreal during WWII. She was discharged after the war as a Sergeant Major.
She was an avid bowler and played in several leagues at Bay Path Bowling Lanes in E.Brookfield over the years. At onetime she was a volunteer at the former Worcester State Hospital. She was an incredible seamstress, enjoyed playing bingo and had a special fondness for her family, especially her grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11a.m. in the MORRISON-MORIN FUNERAL HOME, 1131 Main St., Leicester. A calling hour will precede the service on Thursday from 10 to 11a.m. Burial will be private and at a later date in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund, 60 Walnut St., Wellesley, Ma. 02481.
