John F. Synan
...active in St. William’s Parish and Tewksbury government; 65
TEWKSBURY - John F. Synan, 65, a well known and active member of the Tewksburycommunity, died Thursday, December 25th at home following a courageous six month battle withcancer. He was the husband of Susan D. (Granfield) Synan, with whom he had celebrated a 42ndwedding anniversary this past Oct. 7th.
He was born in Somerville, March 28, 1938, a son of the late Michael and Catherine (Foley)Synan. He was raised in Somerville, and graduated Cathedral High School in Boston. Hematriculated to, and was graduated from, Lowell Technological Institute, now UMass-Lowell.
He retired from GTE’s, Government Systems Division in 1993. He worked for GTE mostrecently at the Needham and Westboro facilities as plant manager and later as the OperationsSystem Manager. He was honored by his peers and fellow members in the National EstimatingSociety as ‘Estimator of the Year’ in 1986.
He served the Town of Tewksbury as a member of the Sewer Advisory Board, a former memberof the Town Personnel Board, and the Patriotic Committee. He was also active in Tewksbury’sLittle League, and had assisted the Orioles Little League team.
As an active communicant of St. William’s Church, he served as a Eucharistic Minister, as a longtime member of the St. William’s Mens Club, and former C.C.D. teacher. He was also a memberof the Fr. Coppen’s Council 4336, Knights of Columbus in Tewksbury.
He was also active in the founding and incorporation of the Massachusetts Chapter of the SpinaBifida Association.
Besides being devoted to his family, he also enjoyed golf as a former member of the St. William’sMens Club - Tewksbury Police Golf League, and more recently as a member of TewksburyC.C.’s “Townies” League. He was especially proud of his Hole-In-One on the second hole atTewksbury C.C. in 2002.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Cathy Synan Loiselle of Tewksbury; two sons anda daughter-in-law, John F. Synan Jr. of Tewksbury, Stephen T. and his wife Donna (Boucher)Synan of Maynard; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Thomas and his wife Mary Synan of Quincy,James and his wife Barbara Synan of Somerville, Daniel and his wife Elizabeth Synan ofArlington; four grandchildren, Catherine and Andrew Loiselle and Julia and Sarah Synan.
His Funeral Mass was held Tuesday, Dec. 30, in St. William’s Church. Interment was in Tewksbury Cemetery.
