Obituary

Joseph Edward Sullivan Jr., 88 years old, beloved husband and best friend of Genevieve A. (Bancroft) Sullivan, died Friday evening at Saints Medical Center following a brief illness surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Lowell on January 6, 1922, he was a son of the late Joseph E. Sullivan Sr. and Helen M. (Reynolds) Sullivan. He was a graduate of the Immaculate Conception Grammar School, Keith Academy and Boston College.
Mr. Sullivan served in the United States Army attaining the rank of Technical Sergeant and also served as a Medic. He was the former C.E.O. of Sullivan Brothers Printers of Lowell and President of Hinsdale Raceway in Hinsdale, NH. Mr. Sullivan served on multiple Boards in the city including Saints Medical Center, D’Youville Manor and Past member of the Leadership Forum at Lowell General Hospital and a past director of the former Union National Bank. He served as Sergeant At Arms for the Lowell Rotary Club and was a member of the Knights of Malta and the Knights of Columbus. Mr. Sullivan was an active and devout member of the Immaculate Conception Church and a member of the Church’s Men’s Guild. Above all, Mr. Sullivan loved the City of Lowell, his Church and was a tireless community leader who helped many in time of need. He will be sorely missed by all.
In addition to his wife and best friend Genevieve, he is survived by his three children, Joseph E. Sullivan III and his wife Virginia of Swanzey, NH, Mary Anna Sullivan MD and her husband Joel Epstein MD of Lowell and Ellen F. Sullivan and her companion James McClutchy of Plum Island; six grandchildren, Meghan Sullivan of Washington, DC, Briana Sullivan of New York, Alexandra Epstein and her spouse Carter Epstein of Cambridge, Michael Epstein of Worcester and Katherine Epstein of Cambridge; a brother. Judge William H. Sullivan and his wife Margaret of Palm City, FL; two sisters, Margaret Shannon and her husband James and Helen McNamee both of Lowell; three sisters in law, Rita Sullivan of Centerville, MA, Elizabeth Sullivan and Naomi Sullivan both of Lowell and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mr. Sullivan was also the brother of the late Thomas R. Sullivan, James H. Sullivan, Walter T. Sullivan, Mary H. Sullivan and Monica O’Hare and brother in law of the late John O’Hare and John J. McNamee.
SULLIVAN - Calling Hours will be held on Tuesday Dec. 21 from 2 until 4 and 6 until 8 pm at the MAHONEY FUNERAL HOME, 187 NESMITH ST. (Rte.38) LOWELL. His Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday Dec. 22, at 11 am at the Immaculate Conception Church, (Lower Church), East Merrimack St. Lowell. Burial in St. Patrick Cemetery, Lowell. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Immaculate Conception Church Building Fund, 3 Fayette Street, Lowell, MA 01852. Arrangements are by the MAHONEY FUNERAL HOME, LOWELL.
