December 17, 2010

Obituary

Carlton Lee Dunn, 78, of 109 Charles Towne Drive, went home to be with his Lord on Friday, December 17, 2010 in the Danville Regional Medical Center.
He was born October 17, 1932 in Schoolfield, Virginia, a son of the late Jehu Dunn and Eva Megginson Dunn.
While attending Schoolfield High School in 1950, he, along with several friends, joined the National Guard. In 1952, serving with the 25th Infantry Division of the United States Army, Carlton was sent to Korea for thirteen months of battle. He retired from the Army in 1975 after twenty-three years of service in Germany, Austria, Alaska and Washington, D.C.
Returning to Danville, he went to work for Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, retiring in 1984.
Carlton was a member of Schoolfield Baptist Church and the Bray Sunday School Class. He was a former member of Glen Oak Golf Club and enjoyed playing golf most of his life. He attended Schoolfield High School reunions and looked forward to the yearly golf tournament with life-long friends.
A hobby of wood-working gave him satisfaction and he was an avid fan of TV sports. Dancing was his idea of a pleasant evening.
He was a member of the Korean Happy Warriors, American Legion and Sons Dan River Post 1097, and Ballard Pruitt Post 647 VFW. He served many years with the Honor Guard in funerals for veterans.
Watching the beautiful Veterans Memorial become a reality in Danville was a sacred blessing to him, along with his many veteran friends who met daily at the site during its construction.
Carlton was predeceased by his cherished wife, Carolyn Knick Dunn, after fifty-four years of marriage, on September 8, 2009. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by brothers Eugene Dunn and Curtis J. Dunn, Sr.
He is survived by a daughter (his special nurse) Cindy Dunn Boyer and her husband, Mark of Danville; adored grandchildren, Brittany and Jake Boyer; sister, Peggy D. Lewis; sister-in-law Jewel Travis Dunn; uncle Maynard Megginson; fiancée Judy Edmonds, all of Danville.
Mornings with his “Hardee Buddies” solving problems of the world was a daily highlight for Carlton, and the family is grateful to each of these special friends. Thanks to Anne Brown and Chris Barley, for their compassionate and faithful caregiving.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests donations be made to Veterans Memorial, c/o Community Foundation, P. O. Box 1039, Danville, VA 24543, or to a charity of your choice.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 20, 2010 at 2 p.m. from Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Johnny Gentry and the Rev. David Turbyfill officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery with military honors by the American Legion Dan River Post 1097 Honor Guard.
