Obituary

GLOUCESTER: Carlos D. Godinho, 81, of Sayward Street, died peacefully at his home on Tuesday, December 14, 2010. He was the husband of the late Marjorie E. (Adams) Godinho who died in 2007.
Born in Lisbon, Portugal on October 14, 1929 he was the son of the late João and Domingas (Da Silva) Godinho. Carlos came to the United States through Ellis Island and settled in Gloucester in 1943. He joined the U.S. Merchant Marines in 1945 and later enlisted in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in August 1954.
Carlos traveled the world as a service technician for Gloucester Engineering for twenty years before his retirement. He also once worked as a self-employed general contractor on Cape Ann, constructing many buildings including the Crow’s Nest and worked as a commercial fisherman for many years.
He was a member of the Gloucester Fraternity Club, DES Portuguese American Club, Gloucester Lodge of Elks, No. 892 and the V.F.W. Post #1624.
He is survived by his three children, John E. Godinho, twins Carol A. Godinho and Carlos D. Godinho, Jr. all of Gloucester; three grandchildren, David and his wife, Jennifer Beylard of Hampden and Christian and Michael Godinho both of Gloucester; a daughter-in-law, Marjorie Beylard of Gloucester; a sister, Joana and her husband, Hank Nazimek of Morris Plains, NJ; three brothers, Joseph and his wife, Mimi Godinho of Lisbon, Portugal, John Godinho of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and Mario Godinho of Kearny, NJ; two sisters-in-law, Jean and her husband Harold “Wimp” Williams and Patricia Jacobus all of Gloucester and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. He also leaves her special friends, Mauro deMouta of Rio de Janeiro, Billy and Judy Pierce of Gloucester, Gail Madruga of Gloucester, Laura Murray of Natick and Mellissa Misuraca of Gloucester. He was also predeceased by Marjorie's son, Lawrence Beylard, Jr., two brothers-in-law, Charles “Eddie” Adams, Jr. and John Cooney and three sisters-in-law, Maureen Godinho, Dorothy and her husband, Earl Barnes and Geraldine Davis and his beloved Shih Tzu, “Marley.”
His funeral service will be held on Saturday in the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester at 9:30 a.m. A reception will follow at the Gloucester Fraternity Club. Visiting hours will be held in the funeral home on Friday evening from 4 – 7 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. Please omit flowers.
