Worcester – Dorothy Higginbottom Mason of Worcester, 91, died Tuesday, December 14, 2010 at the Harbor at Haverhill Crossings, Haverhill, MA.
Born in Sheffield, England, on October 18, 1919 Dorothy came through Ellis Island as an infant with her parents and eight siblings to live in Millbury. In 1942 she moved to Worcester and married Walter “Ding” Mason, who died in 1995. She leaves two daughters: Leslie (Hopkins) Frazier of North Andover and Donna Williams of Grafton, four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
An honors graduate of Millbury High School and Salter Secretarial School, Dorothy worked for several years at the then-Mass Protective Association where she met “Ding.” She was very active in the United Congregational Church, working in the Thrift Shop, Food Pantry and as treasurer of the Women’s Club. In her earlier years she was a Campfire Girls leader. She was also a member of the Worcester Women’s Club, Hall Club, Worcester County Horticultural Society, the Music Guild and Worcester Dance Assembly, and volunteered for many years at Hahnemann Hospital.
Dot loved the outdoors and her summers spent on Lake Monomonac’s Blueberry Island in Winchendon, MA and winter visits to Naples, FL. Always active, she enjoyed walking, swimming and dancing. She was a kind and gracious person and loved a good party.
The burial will be private and there will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, December 23, 11:00 a.m. at the United Congregational Church, 6 Institute Road, Worcester. The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the staff at the Harbor and at Beacon Hospice for their loving care of Dot. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Beacon Hospice, 350 Main Street, #3, Haverhill, MA 01830.
