Ethel Thompson Gauldin, 96, formerly of 156 Forestdale Drive, died Monday, December 13, 2010 at
Roman Eagle Memorial Home where she had been a resident for over two years. Born in Anson County,
North Carolina on November 21, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Arch P. Thompson and
Willow Baldwin Thompson. She was married to D.A. Gauldin who predeceased her in 1999.
Mrs. Gauldin, a member of Third Avenue Congregational Christian Church since 1937, had always been
very active in her church until her health began to fail. She taught Sunday School in the Intermediate Department
for many years. She was a member of the Women's Fellowship, Young At Heart and the Chapel Bible Class. She
had worked as an inspector in Quality Control of Dan River, Inc. In addition, Mrs. Gauldin was an artistic seamstress.
She was the last surviving member of her generation.
Surviving Mrs. Gauldin are two daughters, Romona Collins and husband, Calvin S. Collins, of Newport News, VA and
Mary Frances Crawford and husband, William S. Crawford, of Danville.
. Other survivors include four grandsons,William S. Crawford, Jr. and wife, Sandra, of Glen Allen, VA, John P. Crawford and wife, Lynette,
of Piedmont, SC, and Robert T. Collins and wife, Sheila, and Christopher W. Collins and wife, Shannon, all
of Newport News, Va. Also, eleven great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, she was
predeceased by one grandchild, Calvin S. "Sandy" Collins, Jr.
Funeral services for Mrs. Gauldin will be held Friday, December 17, 2010 at 2 PM at Third Avenue Congregational
Christian Church with the Rev. Fredrick J. Vicks officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at Barker Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday, December 15, 2010 from
6:00 to 7:30 p.m. At other times they will be at the home of Bill and Mary Frances Crawford, at
242 Wheatley Road. The family respectfully suggests in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to
