Mary (Loosigian ) Gallant of South Lawrence died Friday, Dec. 10, 2010 at Prescott House in North Andover. An outgoing, fun loving, and talented crafter, Mary enjoyed card games, gardening, and cooking. Her meticulous needlework resulted in prize-winning embroidery and quilts. She was proudly independent and lived on her own well into her ninety-sixth year.
Born in Watertown, Mass. in 1913, Mary was the daughter of Ohan and Anna Loosigian, early immigrants from Armenia. She grew up in Andover on the family farm now known as Strawberry Hill. Never intimidated by hard work, she contributed both her labor and her paycheck to the family during the years of the Depression and World War II. She worked for many years in the office of the Andover Town Clerk.
In 1947 Mary married her long-time sweetheart, Hubert J. Gallant, who pre-deceased her in 1980. For a number of years she worked as a bookkeeper for Arnold Motors and the Toscano accounting firm.
Mary was the sister of the late Bertha Durgerian of Andover. She leaves her brother, Peter O. Loosigian of Andover. She also is survived by numerous nieces and nephews and their children, as well as her beloved “Button.”
Calling hours will be on Monday December 13, 2010 from 4 to 7 pm at The Charles F. Dewhirst Funeral Home, 80 Broadway, Methuen. Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend funeral services on Tuesday December 14 at 10:00 am in Grace Episcopal Church, 35 Jackson Street, Lawrence. Burial will be in West Parish Garden Cemetery, Andover. Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Episcopal Church, 35 Jackson St., Lawrence, Ma. 01841 or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
