Alan Pollock Schaeffer, age 71, of Packer Road, Mystic, died Monday at his home.
Alan was born in Newark, NJ on July 8, 1932 the son of John M. and Alice (Pollock) Schaeffer. He was a graduate of the Kent School and Oxford Academy and later received his bachelor’s degree from Grinnell College in 1955.
He then entered the US Navy where he served until 1959.before accepting a merchandising position at Montgomery Ward Company where he was employed for 29 years. He also was employed at B. Altman & Co. He spent his retirement years dedicated to writing and model boat restoration.
Alan was an active member of Bishop Seabury Church in Groton where served as Head Usher, a Vestry Member, lay reader, minister of communion, and Lay Eucharistic Minister. He was also a College Sailing Club Commodore, and was a member of the Politcal Science Club, Captain of the Kent School Ski Team,, Riverside Yacht Club, Race Committee, and the Young Life Committee.
He was also a familiar sight along the Mystic River aboard his Eastern 18 boat, “The Alice Jane”. He also enjoyed photography, boat designing, car models and camping.
He was married to Nancy (Gray) Schaeffer at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Riverside on May10, 1958. In addition to his wife, Alan is survived by two sons,. Alan G. Schaeffer of Brooklyn, Ct and Peter Schaeffer of Clearwater, Fla., and his grandchildren, Ben, Sarah, Marc, and Lydia Schaeffer.
The family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Friday from 4-7pm. A Funeral service will be conducted at Bishop Seabury Church, Rte. 117, Groton on Saturday at 9:30am. Burial will be in Elm Grove Cemetery.
