Rev. Thomas Charles “T.C.” WhitehouseRev. T.C. Whitehouse, 86, of Auburndale, who was Pastor Emeritus of the United Methodist Church of Newton, died Sat. Dec. 20, 2003 at the Newton Wellesley Hospital.Rev. Whitehouse was born Jan. 5, 1917 in Pittsburgh PA, the son of Henry and Mary Whitehouse. He was educated in the Pittsburgh public schools, worked for the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad until beginning college. While a student at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia from 1939-1942 he served as director of publicity. He transferred to the Univ. of Pittsburgh where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1944. He attended Western Theological Seminary, Pittsburgh, for one year before transferring to the theological school at Drew University, Madison, NJ, from which he graduated cum laude in 1947. He was president of the class at the seminary. During his seminary years he served churches in Bellevue, PA and Brooklyn, NY. Upon graduation he was received into the Northeast Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church and served churches in North Royalton, Cleveland and Columbus Ohio. Building on an early interest in radio broadcasting, Rev. Whitehouse originated and produced a number of religious radio broadcasts, including Good News, broadcast on the Mutual Broadcasting System from 1955 to 1957. In 1959 he and his family moved to Auburndale, MA when he was appointed Director of Communications for the Massachusetts Council of Churches, a post he held for over 14 years. The highlight of his career came during that time when he produced, from Rome a series on the third session of the Vatican Council for the National Council of Churches. It was broadcast on the ABC radio network in the fall of 1964. Following that service he became editor of Zion’s Herald, a publication supported in part by the Wesleylan Association. He also served as pastor of the United Methodist Church of Newton from 1974-1979.In 1987 he was entered into the United Methodist Communications Hall of Fame. In 1990 he received the Pioneer Award from the North American Section of the World Christian Communications Association. Rev. Whitehouse has also served as co-coordinator of the Newton Hunger Walk, secretary of the Protestant Chaplaincy Council of Newton Wellesley Hospital, as a board member of the West suburban YMCA, as a founder of the CONTACT telephone ministry and as a board member of the Walker Center.Rev. Whitehouse was the husband of the late Elizabeth J. “Libby” (Thomas) Whitehouse, and is survived by his son Mark H. Whitehouse and his wife Patricia of Dedham, his grandchildren Michael Whitehouse of Sunderland, Sarah Howell of Framingham, and Gail Parrott of Dedham, and his dear friend Marjorie Reynolds of Waltham. He was the brother of the late Henry and Paul Whitehouse.Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend visiting hours in the United Parish of Auburndale 64 Hancock St. Auburndale on Mon Dec 29 from 5:30-7:30 PM. A service will be held at 7:30 PM.
