Rena Mae (Ashley) Condike of Apple Care and Rehab in Watch Hill passed into eternal life on Friday, December 3rd at the Westerly Hospital. She was the only child of the late John and Elizabeth (Cudmore) Ashley of Prince Edward Island, Canada and Brockton, Massachusetts. Her husband, James predeceased her in 2000.
Rena was born in Hopkinton, Massachusetts where she was brought up and attended schools. Soon after she married, she and her family moved to Groton and later to Niantic, Connecticut. She and her husband moved to Westerly in 1968 to be closer to their stores in the Franklin Shopping Plaza.
Rena is survived by a son, James N. Condike and wife Barbara of Waterford, Connecticut, and a daughter Gail E. Armstrong and her husband John of Westerly, RI; nine grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
She and her husband traveled extensively through Europe and Canada. For many years they split their time between their homes in Deerfield Beach, Florida and Westerly. Their summers were especially pleasurable on their boat the “Rena Mae” at the Westerly Yacht Club.
Rena loved music. She had played violin as a child and later the piano and sang with her family. She loved to draw and paint and while in school received awards for her drawings.
She loved to cook for her family. She had a fun spirit and a great sense of humor. Rena loved life, was always happy and ready for a laugh. She had an almost childlike innocence about her that was very endearing. Rena will be missed and will be in our hearts forever.
Her family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Friday from 10am-10:45am, immediately followed by a service at 11am. Burial will be in River Bend Cemetery, Westerly.
