Edwin M. Hanks Jr., age 83, of Main Street, Old Mystic, peacefully passed away on Dec. 2, 2010.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mildred; his son, Edwin and daughter-in-law, Sherry Hanks of Ledyard; son-in-law, Daniel Allen of Hartford; grandchildren, Elise and Jonathan Hanks and J. Matthew Correria and wife, Sandra; brother, John and his wife, Ethel, of Essex; sister-in-law, Rose Mather and husband, Robert, of Preston; and several wonderful nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Nancy Allen.
Born on Dec. 22, 1927, to Bessie and Edwin Hanks of Norwich, he was a graduate of NFA, served his country during World War II, volunteered in the Old Mystic Fire Department from 1948, was the first paid Old Mystic Fire Chief in 1979, was Scoutmaster of Troop 35 in the 1960s, and was employed by Bostitch of Pawcatuck/East Greenwich for 32 years.
His first love in his life was his family, followed very closely by fishing, hunting, and a great sense of religious and civic duty.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 4, at the Old Mystic Baptist Church, 151 Shewville Road. Internment will be conducted privately at Elm Grove Cemetery, Mystic.
