WORCESTER-Robert A. Childs, 61, of Worcester, passed away suddenly on Monday, November 29th in UMASS-Memorial Hospital-Memorial Campus after a brief illness. His wife of 37 years Lois A. (Baldwin) Childs passed away November 1st, 2009. He leaves his son, Gregory A. Childs of Worcester; a brother, Donald Childs and his wife Edith of Florence, MA; two sisters, Wendy, wife of Owen Dunphy and Jeanie and her husband Paul Rattelle all of Easthampton, MA and many nephews and nieces.
He was born in Northampton, the son of Robert L. and Jean (Murphy) Childs; and was a 1967 graduate of Northampton High School. He was a 1971 graduate of Worcester Polytechnic Institute earning his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering; and was a brother in the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, and went on to receive his MBA from WPI. Bob had worked for the former Riley Stoker Company, now Babcock Power in the Worcester office as well as in Oregon and Chenai, India and retired after 30 years of service. Mr. Childs was a certified member of the Oregon State Board of Engineering and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Bob was an avid golfer and proud member of Worcester Country Club; he also enjoyed traveling the world for pleasure as well as business with his wife and son. He served his country in the Army National Guard for six years.
The funeral is Friday, December 3rd, from O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue with a Mass at 10:00 AM in Blessed Sacrament Church, 555 Pleasant Street. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery. Calling hours are Thursday, December 2nd from 4:00 until 7:00 PM in the funeral home.
