John Jay Luongo, 61
Lifelong Fitchburg Resident
FITCHBURG - John Jay Luongo, 61, of Fitchburg, died peacefully on Sunday, November 27 after a short illness.
John was born June 24, 1949, in Peterborough, NH, the son of Regina B, Luongo and Frank J. Luongo, Sr.. He was raised in Fitchburg, graduating from Fitchburg High School in 1967. He attended Mount Wachusett Community College and Lowell University.
John, a gentle soul, and a gentle man whose joys were derived from small mercies and sharing life with those he met and served. Each family he helped became a wondrous set of characters whose traits, accomplishments, and adventures were always a marvel for him. He loved hearing the stories of the aged who lived in foreign lands, emigrated and settled in the United States. He often stayed up very late into the night drinking in the reminiscences of his elderly patients. John never wanted much and took great joy in the little he had. John was our baby brother. We will always miss him.
John had a long career as a lab technician starting at Foster Grant Co., 12 years with Borden Chemical in Leominster, and 10 years with GTE in Waltham. He embarked on a second career with Diversified Healthcare, as an elderly and hospice caretaker until his retirement in 2006.
He was a longtime member of Rollstone Congregational Church, where he served as a deacon and member of many church committees. More recently he often attended St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Fitchburg. He enjoyed riding his scooter around Fitchburg, was a dedicated caretaker to his 91 year old mother and many others elders. He will be remembered for his cheerful concern for everyone he encountered.
He is survived by his mother, Regina B. "Betty" Luongo, his twin brother, Frank J. Luongo, Jr., three sisters, Dona Luongo Stein of Fort Collins. CO, Elizabeth M. Dillbeck, of Ashburnham and New Ipswich, NH, and Martha Sue Harris, Quincy, MA, He also leaves nine nieces and nephews, and eight grand nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Frank J. Luongo, Sr.
Family and friends will gather for visiting hours on Saturday, December 4, at 10 a.m. at Rollstone Congregational Church, 199 Main Street, Fitchburg, in the main sanctuary. Funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Following the service, the family will participate in graveside services and burial at Greenvale Cemetery, Route 31, Forest Road, Greenfield, NH.
