Thomas Albert Moss, age 88, formerly of 333 River Run Road in Danville, died on Monday, November 29, 2010 in Wake Medical Center, Raleigh, NC. He had been in declining health for the past four years.
Born June 5, 1922 in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of the late Lee Vester Moss and Ophelia Gammon Moss. Mr. Moss was a well known tobacco farmer and had served as a machine gun operator as Corporal in the United States Army from January 1, 1943 until December 15, 1945. During his time served in the military, he fought in the Aleutians Islands, Sou Philippines, Western Pacific, and Ryukyus and received 4 bronze stars, the good conduct medal, and 2 bronze service stars, as well as the Victory Medal. He was a member of the former Southall Baptist Church and later attended Westover Baptist Church until his health failed.
Mr. Moss is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Lila Strader Moss; one daughter: Dyan Moss Austin and her husband Phil of Raleigh, NC; one sister: Geraldine M. Brown and her husband Harry of Ringgold; three grandchildren: Scott Austin of Raleigh, NC, Nikki Moss of Austin, TX, and Melissa Moss of Myrtle Beach, SC; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son: Keith William Moss; three sisters: Margaret Iris Moss, Hilda Norma Moss, and Violet Frances Taylor; and by two brothers: Edward Lee Moss and Claude Arnold “Sprigger” Moss.
Funeral services officiated by Dr. David Cox will be held on Thursday, December 2, 2010 at two o’clock at the Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in the Moss Family Cemetery on Vandola Road, with graveside military honors by the American Legion Dan River Post 1097 Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. before the funeral service.
