Obituary

Sybil G. (Gilmartin) Bailey of Natick, passed away peacefully on November 17, 2010. She was the beloved wife of the late Lt. Col. Theodore L. Bailey who passed away in 1983 & with whom she shared 40 years of marriage.


Born in East Hampton, N.Y., the daughter of the late John F. & Sarah (Wynne) Gilmartin, Mrs. Bailey was raised & educated there. After graduating from high school, she worked as a dental assistant & then during WWII, Mrs. Bailey ran her family's coal yard while the men in her family served in the armed forces. After marrying her husband on November 20, 1943, Mrs. Bailey lived in Springfield & Falls Church, VA before settling in Natick where her husband served at the Natick Army Research Center. While her husband served as the U.S. representative to NATO, Mrs. Bailey travelled extensively throughout the world. For a number of years she was a sales clerk at Jordan Marsh in Framingham & was a volunteer for over 20 years & also served on the Board of Directors of the Leonard Morse Hospital Auxiliary. An avid reader & gardener, Mrs. Bailey was a member of the Natick Garden Club, the Friends of the Morse Institute Library, served as a Cub Scout Den Mother, & was a member of St. Linus Church & the Sons & Daughters of East Hampton, N.Y.


She is survived by 2 children, David Bailey & his wife Donna of Harwichport & Mary Schneekloth & her husband Paul of Natick; 6 grandchildren, Erin Hall & her husband John, Alyse Wilkinson & her husband Paul, Tina Murley & her husband Richard, Brian Schneekloth & his wife Becky, Lori Rice & her husband Peter, & Tracy Milam & her husband Brian; 12 great-grandchildren; & several nieces & nephews.


A funeral service will be held on Friday, November 19, 2010 at 12:00 Noon in the Chapel of the John Everett & Sons Funeral Home, 4 Park St. (at Natick Common) Natick. A period of visitation will take place for 2 hours prior to the service. Private burial will take place at the convenience of her family in the MA National Cemetery in Bourne.
